Silence your inner critic and boost your self esteem-How to

Writer: Marie MFTMarie MFT

The voice of the inner critic is the one that always leaves you feeling less than good enough, provoking you to second guess yourself and magnify your flaws and insecurities. This voice nags and drags you down, constantly pointing out what you did wrong and what you ‘should’ have done better.

Targeting and uprooting this inner voice is an essential part of the Self Care SOS Recovery Program here at Healthier Place, PLLC, because of how severely it damages self esteem. We want to help you uproot this voice too, so you can finally boost your self esteem and feel good about yourself and your efforts even when it’s not perfect. Here are some tips and affirmations for you.

Balancing knowing you can do more with appreciating your efforts becomes easier through the lens of God’s grace.

Boost your self esteem

Why? With a personal knowledge of and relationship with God, you develop a confidence in these truths:

You are already loved.

You are already accepted.

You are already good enough.

No human being’s perception of you can take away from your God-given value.

Push yourself to do your very best in any given situation.

Sometimes the inner critic’s voice is so effective, because we hear some truth mixed in with the contempt and self hate. It can become hard to separate the baby from the bath water so to speak when we’re in an emotionally charged place. If you know you short-changed the project or treated that person poorly, of course it’s going to hurt to realize that and how it makes you feel about yourself as a person, because you’re not proud of what you’ve done. Holding yourself accountable to acting with integrity and giving things your best helps you to silence that voice that just wants to bad mouth you and bring you down.

Reframe your mindset from doing your best/better from being an attempt to prove yourself.

No matter what we do, whether it’s our best or not, we cannot control another person’s thoughts, feelings, or behaviors—including how they’ll respond to us. Releasing the desire and expectation that we can control or cause an effect in someone else by what we say or do can help quiet the inner critic and boost our self esteem. This is because we are no longer depending on what others do or how they respond for our happiness, peace, security, or confidence. Develop your own sense of internal motivation or “why” behind why you are the way you choose to be and why you choose to do what you choose to do.
